As I wrote in this blogpost, I am making a little potpourri of my favorite designers. It was difficult for me to choose. I felt I was disordering some darlings because I had to remove some of my list. Otherwise, there was going to be a bit too many.

I have chosen to look into the decades from the 1910 to the 1960. Some of the designers have been leading in all decades, some of them are still leading or there legacy do. Some of them most of you possibly never heard of.

The first I will look at, is Cristóbal Balenciaga. A Spanish designer born in 1895. He was only 19 years old when he opened his first fashion house in San Sebastia in Spain (1914). Under the Spanish Civil War, he moved to Paris and opened the Balenciaga fashion house. In the 1960s the Balenciaga houses was closed and Cristóbal Balenciaga died in 1972. Between 1968 and 1987 the balanciarga hous did not designed any collektions. In 1989 the first stores was opned again. Today Belanciarga is owned by the Gucci grope and today is one of the most it- fashion houses in the world.

Balenciaga is known as one of the great post war designers. His style was impeccably elegant, with classic shapes and extraordinary detailing and craftsmanship. He mastered the art of sewing, cutting and draping. Maybe that is one of the big secrets of being a great designer. Many of the disigners who has worked for Cristóbal Balenciaga ended up with their own brand, designers as Oscar del la Rente, Emanuel Ungarro and Hubert Givenchi all has designed for Balenciaga.

Cristóbal Balenciaga and Christian Dior was rivals and the question has always been, who was the most elegant” however Dior said that Cristóbal Balenciaga was the “master”

He definitely was a master, his bold and fashion forward way of using materials, the way he made clothes look effortless and dramatic at the same time and how he always made ot look like is just flowed onto the female body.

Elegant and dramatic at the same time (all pictures from pinterest)

The details are to die for

And the way they are used are amazing

The silluets of the coats are always moved away from the body. however, it is still elegant, feminine and so effortless to look at

This is the modern version from 2006

One of the things I love the most about Cristóbal Balenciagas designs are the dramatic sleeves, I think it shows how he was influenced by his Spanish heritage and culture.
